Ghana National College has become the latest school to lose its seeded spot at the 2019 edition of the National Science & Maths Quiz. After 10 One-Eighth stage contests, six seeded schools have fallen prey to determined schools coming from the Preliminary Stage.
Ghana National College faced tough opposition from St. John’s Grammar School and Bishop Herman College. The 2012 finalists, St. John’s Grammar School, pulled 35 points to win the contest, while their closest contenders BIHECO came close with 29 points, leaving Ghana National at the bottom of the pack with 21 points.
St. John’s Grammar’s NSMQ2019 campaign is an improvement over last year’s, where they lost their One-Eighth contest to the unassuming Sandema SHTS.
Bishop Herman College gave the eventual winners a stiff contest, but kept losing points in the penultimate round. Although they were in the lead by 2 points at the end of the first round, St. John’s Grammar drew parity with them in the Speed Race.
St. John’s Grammar School kept their cool and extend their lead in the last three rounds, to make their first Quarterfinal appearance after three years.
BIHECO and Ghana National will now have to fight their way back to the National Stage through the Regional Qualifiers in 2020.
