Cocoa Processing Company (CPC), located at Tema, hosted some teams of the 2019 edition of the National Science and Maths Quiz on June 27, 2019, to give insights into to how Cocoa, a cash crop, is processed.
The management of the company organised a brief presentation, spearheaded by the Managing Director, Nana Agyenim Boateng, to take the students through the history of the company and its production processes.
The company, established in 1965 and incorporated in 1981 as a limited liability, and publicly traded on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) in 2003, has three factories, comprising of two Cocoa factories and a Confectory factory. The Cocoa factory processes raw cocoa beans into semi-finished products such as the cocoa liquor, butter, natural/alkanised cake or powder, while the Confectory factory manufactures the Golden Tree Chocolate bars, Chocolate coated peanuts popularly known as pebbles, and many others.
In his presentation to the students, the Managing Director stated some core values of the company as pursuing quality of the products manufactured, and ensuring health and safety of the staff, visitors and consumers through a safe and secure work environment.
Apart from the varieties of products benefits derived from cocoa, Nana Agyenim Boateng revealed that cocoa shells can be used in the production of biomass to save electricity.
For the purpose and prevention of contamination, the team did not to tour the entire production division of the company, but had the opportunity to witness how the cocoa beans are sorted out.
At the end of the tour, participants were given some samples of Chocolate bars and drinks for refreshment.
