It was an all-debutant affair when Zion College, Bongo SHS and St. Ignatius of Loyola SHS came face to face in the 10th preliminary contest of the ongoing 2017 National Science & Maths Quiz.
It was St. Ignatius of Loyola SHS, the Upper West institution that took the early lead in Round One (1) which is the round involving general questions on Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics. Zion College also came close with eight (8) points whilst Bongo SHS lagged back on two (2) points.
St. Ignatius of Loyola SHS continued to dominate the second and third rounds of the competition with Zion College refusing to give up till the end.
At the end of the third round, the gap between the two leading schools widened to seven (7) points.
But St. Ignatius of Loyola SHS lost their composure in the penultimate round as they failed to correctly respond to the majority of questions posed to them by the Quiz mistress, Mrs. Gladys Schwinger. A wrong response also fetched a penalty point which reduced their accumulated points from the previous round.
At the end of Round Four (4), St. Ignatius of Loyola SHS still maintained the lead although the difference between them and their closest contender was just a point. They had 22 points followed closely by Zion College with 21 points. At this point, it was almost impossible for Bongo SHS to win the contest as they had accumulated only 10 points at the end of this round.
With the above scores, the winner was to be determined in the 5th and final round (riddles) of the competition.
It was at this point that Zion College, the oldest High School in the Volta Region, put up an excellent show to win the contest.
They were able to solve two out of the four riddles whilst Bongo SHS picked up one and final going unanswered.
Bongo SHS and St. Ignatius of Loyola SHS finished the contest with 13 and 22 points respectively whilst Zion College carried the day with a total of 27 points.
Zion College qualifies to the one-eighth stage of the contest which begins on Monday, June 12, 2017.
