The Ashanti and Central Regions of Ghana top with the highest number of schools that have qualified for the quarterfinals of the 2017 National Science & Maths Quiz on-going at the University of Ghana, Legon.

Out of the twenty seven quarter-finalists, the two regions have seven schools each in the race of winning the coveted trophy and claiming the bragging rights as champions of Science and Mathematics in the country.

The Ashanti can boast of 2015 winners, Prempeh College, Kumasi High School, St. Hubert Minor Seminary SHS, KNUST SHS, Jachie Pramso SHS, T.I. AMASS Fomena and Aduman SHS, making up the numbers for the region at the quarterfinal stage.

The Central Region, on the other hand, has two-time winners, Mfantsipim School, reigning champions, Adisadel College, Ghana National College, Holy Child School, Aggrey Memorial SHS, University Practice SHS and Wesley Girls’ High School.

However, Regional Science Coordinators of the Ghana Education Service believe that the performance of the two regions transcend that of the individual schools’.

Speaking to www.nsmq.com.gh, Mr. Richard Arthur Payne, Central Regional Science Coordinator, attributed his region’s continued success to rigorous internal and external trial contests engaged in by the schools. He was hopeful of retaining the trophy for the Central Region after Adisadel College won it in 2016.

Besides the Ashanti and Central Regions, the Volta Region secured three slots at the quarterfinals this year, after schools from the region failed to make it past the one-eighth stage in 2016.

The Western and Eastern Regions also have three schools each making it to the quarter-finals.

Tamale SHS is the only school holding the fort for the Northern region in the competition. Meanwhile, no school from the Brong Ahafo, Upper East, and Upper West Regions of the country secured a place at the quarterfinals.

The Quarterfinals of the 2017 National Science & Maths Quiz commences on Thursday, June 22, 2017 and ends on Saturday, June 24, 2017, with three contests each day at the R.S. Amegashie Auditorium, Legon.

Winners of the nine quarterfinal contests will compete at the semi-finals slated for Monday, June 26, 2017.

The 2017 edition of the National Science & Maths Quiz is sponsored by the Ghana Education Service through the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) and supported by Tigo, GOIL, Prudential Life Insurance, Accra College of Medicine and GCB Bank.
