Ghana National College has been seeded for the third time in succession at the 2018 National Science & Maths Quiz and Science Festival ongoing at the University of Ghana, Legon.
David Nathan Obeng-Amoako and Elizabeth-Lynda Nartey proved to be a formidable team as they outdid their counterparts from the Central Region, Swedru SHS and Volta Region-based St. Mary’s Seminary SHS in the fourth one-eighth contest.
After crashing St. Augustine’s College in the Central Regional competition, Swedru SHS escaped early elimination in the preliminaries as one of the 18 highest scoring losing schools to sail through to the one-eighth stage.
The Volta Region-based, St. Mary’s Seminary SHS won the one-eighth contest involving St. Ignatius of Loyola and Nkroful Agric SHS.
At the end of the contest, Ghana National College’s final score of 57 points was enough to keep alive their hope of clinching the ultimate prize.
They will clash in the quarterfinals contest with the winners of the fifth and sixth one-eighth stage contest that will take place later in the day.
Aburi Girls’ SHS will come face-to-face with Obuasi SHTS and Abuakwa State College while Bolgatanga SHS and Osei Kyeretwie SHS will attempt to oust NSMQ veterans, University Practice SHS in the last contest for the day.
The stakes are high and the 27 quarterfinalists will not only be looking forward to beating their competitors but doing so with high scores to increase their cash prize from GCB Bank, Sponsors of the Money Zone.
At the quarterfinal stage, each point of the competing schools will be worth Five Ghana cedis (GHS 5) and this will be paid out to each of the three competitors and their teacher.
The National Science & Maths Quiz and Science Festival is sponsored by the Ghana Education Service through the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), with support from GCB Bank, GTP, Lancaster University Ghana, Academic City College, Medifem Multi-Specialist Hospital, Accra College of Medicine, Hawtie Makeup, West African Centre for Cell Biology for Infectious Pathogens and Awake Purified Drinking water.
