St. Louis SHS survive one-eighth stage, send Kumasi High back to Regionals

St. Louis SHS today truncated the cycle of seeded schools booking their places in next year’s contest by crashing Kumasi High School and Armed Forces SHTS in an exciting one-eighth stage contest at the University of Ghana, Legon.

They become the first all-girls’ school from the preliminaries to qualify for the quarterfinals slated for June 28-30, 2018.

The ladies from St. Louis SHS won the contest with 43 points while their contenders Kumasi High School and Armed Forces SHTS ended the competition with 40 and 21 points respectively.

Prior to the contest, Kumasi High School was tipped to have an easy win over the other schools due to their three years’ consistency at the semifinals. However,  they fell out of luck this time around as St. Louis SHS left nothing to chance to oust their regional rivals to qualify to the quarterfinals.

In the penultimate round, Kumasi High School gave their fierce contender, St. Louis SHS a run for their money as they were tied with the same scores; leaving the contest to be decided in the final round of riddles.

St. Louis SHS drew the first blood by picking the first riddle for 3 points with Kumasi High School and Armed Forces SHTS also picking the second and third riddles for 3 points.

The contest was then to be decided with the final riddle of the contest. It was the 2017 semifinalist, Kumasi High School that rang their bell first after the second clue but were unsuccessful in answering. Armed Forces SHTS also gave a try to salvage the situation in favour of Kumasi High School but again failed.

Pearl Owusuaa Adjei capitalized on the wrong responses from their contenders; composed her response and delivered it calmly to send her school past the one-eighth stage.

Before the final results could be announced by Dr. Elsie Effah Kaufmann, Quiz mistress, supporters of Kumasi High School walked out of the auditorium in disappointment.

St. Louis SHS will meet winners of the eighth and ninth one-eighth stage contests while Kumasi High School and Armed Forces SHTS will have to fight for a place at the 2019 edition, by first winning their regional contest.

The stakes are high and the 27 quarterfinalists will not only be looking forward to beating their competitors but with higher scores to increase their cash prize from GCB Bank, Sponsors of the Money Zone.

At the quarterfinal stage, each point will be worth Five Ghana Cedis (GHS 5) and will be paid in cash to each of the schools’ three contestants and teacher.

The National Science & Maths Quiz and Science Festival is sponsored by the Ghana Education Service through the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), with support from GCB Bank, GTP, Lancaster University Ghana, Academic City College, Medifem Multi-Specialist Hospital, Accra College of Medicine, Hawtie Makeup, West African Centre for Cell Biology for Infectious Pathogens and Awake Purified Drinking water. The Sci-Tech Fair is sponsored by Goil, Prudential Life Insurance Ghana, and Tullow, while Bond Savings & Loans and RMG Ghana Ltd are sponsoring the Mentorship Sessions.
