Central and Ashanti Regions have topped with the highest number of schools to have qualified for the quarterfinals of the 2018 National Science & Maths Quiz.
Out of the 27 schools that have made it to the next round of the competition, the two regions have six (6) institutions each, holding the fort of lifting the trophy for their school and their respective regions.
Last year, both the Central and Ashanti regions had seven schools each seeded for this year’s edition but unfortunately, both have lost a slot each while Greater Accra region and Eastern region have gained two slots each.
Sandema SHTS for the first time is the only school representing the whole of Upper East Region with Northern region based Tamale SHS making it past the one-eighth stage in two successive years.
A total of ten (10) seeded schools from NSMQ2017 lost their position to their competitors coming from the preliminary stage of competition. Among the new entrants are St. Louis SHS, Koforidua Sec. Tech, Kumasi SHTS, Krobo Girls’ SHS and Sandema SHTS. The others are NSMQ debutant; Islamic SHS, Accra Academy, St. Margaret Mary SHS, and two time NSMQ winners, Opoku Ware School and St. Peter’s SHS.
Starting Thursday June 28, 2018, there will be a total of nine separate quarterfinal contests out of which the winners will progress to the semifinals of the NSMQ2018 and keep their hopes of clinching the trophy, cash prizes and the bragging rights as champions of Science and Mathematics in Ghana.
The stakes are high and the 27 quarterfinalists will not only be looking forward to beating their competitors but also, with higher scores to increase their cash prize from GCB Bank, Sponsors of the Money Zone.
The National Science & Maths Quiz and Science Festival is sponsored by the Ghana Education Service through the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), with support from GCB Bank, GTP, Lancaster University Ghana, Academic City College, Medifem Multi-Specialist Hospital, Accra College of Medicine, Hawtie Makeup, West African Centre for Cell Biology for Infectious Pathogens and Awake Purified Drinking water.
