The 2019 National Science & Maths Quiz (NSMQ) and Science Festival has officially been launched with a new customised bronze trophy and Quiz mistress unveiled.
135 schools will this year engage in exciting nerve wracking contests to determine which school clinches onto the trophy and bragging rights, along with its mouth-watering prizes.
In his keynote address, Dr. Kwabena Bempah Tandoh, Deputy Director-General in charge of Quality and Access of the Ghana Education Service, underscored the importance of NSMQ to national development.
According to him, education remains the single most important investment a nation could ever make for its teeming youth.
Dr. Tandoh pledged the government’s commitment to the programme and implored stakeholders in education to support the discovery and development of such young academic talents.
‘Government has committed through the Education Strategic Plan 2018-2030 to increase enrollment in science-related programmes in various tertiary institutions in Ghana,” he said.
The Deputy Director-General also revealed that the government has approved a five-year implementation of a Basic Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (BSTEM) programme to provide equipment to over 38,000 basic schools countrywide.
On her part, Mrs. Adelaide Asante, Director of Innovation at the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation pledged her outfit’s support for this year’s National Science & Maths Quiz and Science Festival especially the Sci-Tech Fair slated for June 14-15, 2019, where students from various levels of education would apply creativity and knowledge as well as their understanding of concepts in science to produce solutions to societal challenges.
She also used the occasion to wish all contestants the very best at NSMQ2019.
In her address, Mrs. Nana Akua Ankomah-Asare, Managing Director of Primetime Limited, producers of the NSMQ, mentioned that the 2019 edition of the NSMQ promises to be exciting with new concepts and prizes introduced to the fiesta.
Mrs. Ankomah-Asare further entreated students to fully participate in all the activities and programmes that are tailor-made for them in unearthing their potentials.
She also thanked various sponsors for their support for making NSMQ2019 possible.
The Preliminary stage contests begin from June 17-22, 2019 at the R.S Amegashie Auditorium and the New N Block, both on the University of Ghana campus.
