The Regional Qualifiers of the 2021 edition of the National Science & Maths Quiz are underway. With schools competing for qualification slots across the country, here’s a rundown of the contests that took place on Day One (3rd May, 2021) in the Upper West Region.
Contest One
The Upper West Regional Qualifiers opened with a stellar performance by the gentlemen from St. Francis Xavier Junior Seminary SHS. They won their contest against Nandom SHS and Tumu SHTS effortlessly, with a 29-point margin.

Contest Two

In the second contest, Jirapa SHS took an early lead and maintained it to the very end, to emerge winners. Their contenders, Wa Islamic SHS and Ullo SHS could barely match up to their capability.
Contest Three

The third contest was the highlight of the day, as the ladies from St. Francis Girls’ SHS wowed the audience with a tactical performance. Calm, yet confident and resolute, St. Francis Girls’ SHS answered a majority of their questions correctly and picked most of the bonus questions in the contest. They won the contest with 52 points; the highest score of the day.
Contest Four
As the highest runner-up from the first three contests, Nandom SHS got the opportunity to compete again, as Funsi SHS and Holy Family SHS failed to turn up for their contest. Unfortunately, this second chance did not yield Nandom SHS any fruits. They, together with St. Ignatius of Loyola SHS, lost the last contest to Lawra SHS.

The four winners, together with the three winners from Day 2’s contest, would participate in two contests on May 4, 2021, to select five schools to represent the Region at the National Championship. The five schools would comprise the two winners of the individual contests and three highest runners-up. This structure of qualifiers is to ensure that only the best represent the Upper West Region at the National Championship.
