On Wednesday 5th May, 2021, 13 schools from all over the Greater Accra Region gathered to compete in four contests to progress to the final of the Championship, scheduled to take place on Thursday 6th May, 2021. Here’s a summary of how each of the winners fared in their respective contests.

Contest 1

PRESEC – Legon, the reigning champions sweat through the first contest with a fiery display from Odorgonno SHS. With 3 riddles and a 2-point margin to break, PRESEC – Legon persevered, and in signature style answered the remaining three riddles to secure a wholesome victory. They compete again tomorrow (6th May, 2021) to defend their Regional Championship title.

Contest 2

Former champions St. Thomas Aquinas SHS and Achimota School went head-to-head in an electrifying second contest with OLAM SHS caught between the two NSMQ giants. Achimota School started perfectly, with an impeccable first round performance that saw them answering all their major questions correctly and snatching bonus points from failed attempts by both AQUINAS and OLAM SHS. Alas, the Achimota team wobbled through the second and third rounds, allowing AQUINAS to bridge the initial 14-point gap. At the end of the final Round, both Achimota School and St. Thomas Aquinas SHS were on par with 39 points. With a sigh of relief, Achimota School answered the tie-breaker question after an over-enthusiastic, but wrong attempt by St. Thomas Aquinas SHS.

Contest 3

In a show of resilience, Chemu SHS dominated the third contest with Accra Academy and Tema Methodist taking turns to try and oust them as contest leaders. Despite their best efforts and the attempts by Holy Trinity Cathedral SHS, Chemu SHS won the contest and gleefully booked their slot in the final contest of the 2021 Greater Accra #AbsaRegionalChampionship.

Contest 4

The last contest for the day offered Odorgonno SHS a chance at redemption after St. Margaret Mary SHS pulled out of the competition at the very last minute. Per the rules of the NSMQ, a vacant slot in any contest is filled by fielding the highest scoring losing school in the previous contest(s). As such, although Odorgonno SHS lost to PRESEC – Legon in the first contest, their 43-point finish enabled them to fill the vacancy and conquer West Africa SHS (via a nerve-wracking tie-breaker) and Ghanata SHS to progress to the final on Thursday 6th May, 2021.
