Scenes from the Greater Accra Regional Qualifiers

Regional Qualifiers

The Greater Accra Region presents nine schools that hope to join the region’s four seeded schools at the One-eighth Stage. Based on their qualifying scores, the region appears very evenly matched, with the three highest-scoring qualifying schools recording 59 (St. Thomas Aquinas SHS), 57 (Chemu SHS) and 55 (Odorgonno SHS) points respectively. In a like fashion, schools in Pot B in the region were also evenly matched with 46 (Tema Methodist SHS), 44 (OLAM SHS) and 42 (Ashaiman SHS) points. It was only Ghanata SHS (28) who scored lower than 40 points across the region. Holy Trinity Cathedral SHS (41) and West Africa SHS (40) joined Ghanata SHS in Pot C.

Regional Championship

After securing their qualification to the National Championship, these nine schools had the opportunity to face off the seeded schools in the region for the third edition of the Absa Greater Accra Regional Championship. Odorgonno SHS and Ashaiman SHS were phased out by 2020 Champions PRESEC-Legon in a contest that ended with the champions winning by a 7-point margin.

St. Thomas Aquinas SHS lost to Achimota School from a tie-breaker in the second Championship contest, with OLAM SHS clearly out of their depth in that contest. Chemu SHS was the first regionally qualified school to win their Championship Contest, proving too tough for Accra Academy, Tema Methodist SHS and Holy Trinity Cathedral SHS to deal with.

In the Final contest, PRESEC-Legon completed another historic feat in the NSMQ with back-to-back Greater Accra Regional Championship wins, fending off Achimota School, Chemu SHS and Odorgonno SHS with a dominant and decisive win.

PRESEC – Legon is the only school to win back-to-back NSMQ Regional Championships

Dusting off the “battle scars” of the Regional Qualifiers, the 9 schools in this year’s Greater Accra #NSMQPrelims will hope to prepare and triumph convincingly. Contest 1 will feature Chemu SHS, Tema Methodist SHS and Holy Trinity Cathedral SHS. The second contest will see a face-off between St. Thomas Aquinas SHS, Ashaiman SHS and Ghanata SHS. The final Preliminary Stage contest will feature Odorgonno SHS, OLAM SHS and West Africa SHS.

All contests will be streamed live on Facebook and Youtube.
