The National Science & Maths Quiz Quarter-final Stage, kicked off in a charged atmosphere as Keta Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Mpraeso SHS, and Achimota School, all seeded schools, took to the stage for the final contest of the first day. The packed auditorium echoed with cheers from the supporters of each school, setting the tone for a fiercely competitive match. At the end of the contest, Keta SHTS successfully defeated last year’s finalist, Achimota School, progressing to the Semi-final Stage with an impressive 54 points!
Before the contest began, each school briefly highlighted its rich history. The Quiz Mistress, Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, praised Achimota School and Keta SHTS for including female contestants in their teams, an inspiring step towards gender inclusivity in Science and Mathematics competitions.
From the outset, Keta SHTS asserted their dominance in Round One, answering questions with precision and claiming crucial bonuses from their opponents. Perpetual Gakpetor, one of Keta SHTS’s contestants, impressed the audience with her swift and accurate responses, driving her school to an impressive 33 points. Achimota School trailed behind with 20 points, while Mpraeso SHS managed 14 points.
The Round Two, the ‘Prudential Life Insurance Speed Race’, proved challenging for all the schools. Each team struggled to maintain its score, with Keta SHTS adding only two points, Achimota School gaining four, and Mpraeso SHS losing five crucial points.
The ‘Problem of the Day’ in Round Three stumped all three schools. Achimota School scored five out of 10 points, Keta SHTS secured three points, and Mpraeso SHS ended with just two points.
In Round Four, the ‘Jupay Money Transfer True/False’, both Keta SHTS and Achimota School gained 10 points each, while Mpraeso SHS also boosted its score with 10 points. The contest was becoming increasingly competitive, with supporters on the edge of their seats.
The Riddle Round ‘GOIL Riddle Bonanza’ brought an exciting climax. Keta SHTS’ s substitute, Fredrick Sowalo, electrified the audience by solving the first two riddles, drawing roars from the crowd. Achimota School managed to grab the final riddle, but it was too little, too late.
At the end of the contest, Keta SHTS emerged victorious with a solid lead, progressing to the Semi-final Stage. Their performance earned them the Pepsodent Highest Scorer Award worth GH₵3,000 and an additional GH₵1,000 for solving two riddles. Achimota School received GH₵500 for solving one riddle, courtesy of the GOIL Super Bonanza.
