Ghana National College Shocks Opoku Ware School in Quarter-Finals Showdown!

The final day of the 2024 National Science & Maths Quiz Quarter-finals ended in a spectacular twist as Ghana National College clinched a last-minute victory over Opoku Ware School, in an electrifying contest filled with unexpected turns and fierce competition. The packed auditorium vibrated with energy as students from Opoku Ware School and Ghana National College cheered their teams with loud "jama" songs, fueling a charged atmosphere that only intensified with each round.



The contest began with all three schools, Opoku Ware School, Ghana National College, and Aburi Presby SHTS, in close contention, each team determined to claim every point possible. By the end of Round One, Opoku Ware School led with 28 points, with Aburi Presby SHTS and Ghana National College following closely at 23 and 20 points, respectively.



In Round Two, the ‘Prudential Life Insurance Speed Race’, the pace of the competition quickened as Opoku Ware School and Ghana National College battled with impressive speed and precision. Opoku Ware School added six more points to their lead, while Ghana National College stumbled, losing a point due to a few incorrect answers. Aburi Presby SHTS added a single point, keeping them within reach but struggling to close the gap.


The round ended with jubilant cheers as both Opoku Ware School and Ghana National College supporters chanted their school anthems, setting the scene for a fiercely competitive third round.


The Round Three, ‘The Problem of the Day’, saw Ghana National College excel, skilfully solving the problem to gain an impressive eight points, while Opoku Ware School managed four points and Aburi Presby SHTS, three. This strong display kept Ghana National College in the race and poised for a comeback as the tension continued to build.



In a nail-biting last round, the stakes reached a fever pitch. All three schools had a shot at victory, but Ghana National College managed to answer the last two riddles correctly, edging out Opoku Ware School in a breath-taking finish. Ghana National secured their place in the Semi-finals with 46 points, beating Opoku Ware by a single point, and leaving the crowd in disbelief.

This Quarter-final Stage of the 2024 NSMQ has undoubtedly lived up to its billing as the “year of surprises.”
