Mentorship Ep. 2: “Know Your Potential, Play to Your Strengths.” – Ms Akosua Osei Delivers an Empowering Message

The second episode of the Mentorship Session on November 8, 2024, featured Ms Akosua Osei, founder of B-Tech Connected and Co-founder of Startup Convos. Her session was themed STEM Communication: Entrepreneurship and Knowledge Sharing in Focus. Ms Osei shared her personal journey, including the challenges and pivotal moments that shaped her career.

Reflecting on her childhood, she recounted the early loss of her father and the influence of her uncle, who directed her towards a university course she did not choose. The academic path proved challenging, and in her final year, she faced setbacks, failing two courses that delayed her graduation. Undeterred, Ms Osei resat the exams, balancing her academic obligations with her passion for business. Despite her grades suffering, she thrived as a young entrepreneur, demonstrating resilience and resourcefulness.

Ms Osei described a turning point, a “light bulb moment” she experienced on her way home one day, when she realised the entrepreneurial spirit was in her from a young age.

I have always been an entrepreneur at heart. I hated to stay in one place, so I began going door-to-door to teach children in my neighbourhood, and I was making quite a bit of money.” she shared.

Her love for sharing knowledge and testing ideas became a driving force in her career. She encouraged the audience to recognise and develop their strengths.

I know how to build a stellar team to generate industrious ideas. I’ve had incredible mentors who guided me throughout my entrepreneurial journey,” Ms Osei noted.

She advised young people to seek out mentors but to be aware of their own worth so they can bring value to these relationships.

Don’t always approach relationships with a mindset of what you’ll get in return. Instead, focus on what you can offer. You can share your opinions respectfully - that’s something Gen Z often struggles with.” She said.

Ms Osei’s session left the audience inspired, highlighting the power of perseverance, self-awareness, and the importance of mentorship in building a successful career in STEM and beyond.
