Mr Jacob A. Osae, an internationally acclaimed poet, screenwriter, and author, celebrated for his works in sci-fi and fantasy was the guest for the seventh episode of the Mentorship Sessions. His discussion centred on STEM, focusing on science fiction and fantasy.
While studying at Accra Academy, Mr Osae began writing as a hobby. Although his initial ambition was to follow in his father’s footsteps and become an engineer, particularly in Biomedical Engineering, he was instead placed in a Physics and Computer Science programme. This unexpected shift led him to a mentor who had a lasting impact on his life. Finding Computer Science challenging and unsatisfying, he eventually redirected his focus to Mathematics.
Mr Osae mentioned how his parents' storytelling shaped his decision to become a writer. His physics teacher’s encouragement also motivated him to refine his craft. Passionate about writing, he transitioned to an English major to further develop his skills, noting that while he studied physics, he always felt destined to write.
In 2019, his debut novel, A Walking Rainbow, received critical and commercial acclaim, marking his entry into the literary world. This success was followed by his highly praised sci-fi and fantasy novel, The Raven (2020), which brought him international recognition and a national TV interview on GTV. Mr Osae has since published other notable works, including Oaks of Definition (2016) and DNA: Origins (2023), solidifying his reputation as a leading contemporary author.
Additionally, as a literary consultant for the STEM division of the Ghana Education Service, he has developed curriculum materials that incorporate STEM literature into classrooms.
He concluded with an inspiring message for young people, urging them to recognise their true passions and commit to them wholeheartedly. By pursuing what they genuinely love, he emphasised, they could unlock their full potential and create meaningful impact in their chosen fields.
