Mfantsipim School Triumphs in Epic Tiebreaker Contest, Eliminates Prempeh College in Quarter-final Stage

Mfantsipim School has secured a spot in the Semi-final Stage of the 2024 National Science & Maths Quiz, after an epic tiebreaker victory over Prempeh College in one of the most anticipated Quarter-final contests. The clash, which also featured Swedru Secondary School, lived up to expectations as the schools fiercely competed for academic supremacy.

The first round saw a tough competition between Mfantsipim School and Prempeh College, with both schools closely matched at 29 and 30 points, respectively. Swedru Secondary School, however, lagged behind with 13 points. Despite the setback, Swedru Secondary School’s supporters remained hopeful as their team prepared to rally in the next rounds.

The Round Two, ‘Prudential Life Insurance Speed Race’, tested the schools’ speed and accuracy. Known as the Speed Race, it lived up to its name, with Prempeh College adding five points and Mfantsipim School racing ahead with an additional nine points, bringing their total to 38 points. Swedru Secondary School, unfortunately, remained silent throughout the round, failing to make a significant impact.

The Round Three, the Problem of the Day, posed a biology question on the genetic code. It proved to be a stumbling block for all three schools. Mfantsipim School managed to secure two points for their attempt, while Prempeh College and Swedru SHS each gained one point.

In the fourth round, the 'Jupay Money Transfer True/False' saw each school answering with confidence, with all three teams securing 10 points. This round heightened the competition, as Prempeh College and Mfantsipim School were neck and neck, while Swedru SHS struggled to catch up.

The final round of riddles, the ‘GOIL Riddle Bonanza’, was a heart-stopping affair. Mfantsipim School claimed the first riddle, giving them an advantage.

However, Prempeh College missed the second riddle, allowing Swedru Secondary School to capitalise and take the point. Prempeh then answered the third and fourth riddles correctly, resulting in a tie at 53 points between Mfantsipim School and Prempeh College.

The contest was decided in a sudden-death tiebreaker. Mfantsipim School confidently answered the first question, winning the contest with 56 points and securing their place in the Semi-finals. Prempeh College finished with 53 points, while Swedru SHS ended with 24 points.

This contest will be remembered as one of the most competitive Quarter-finals of the 2024 NSMQ, with Mfantsipim School proving their mettle against two formidable opponents.
