NSMQ: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Ghana’s Most Iconic Quiz Competition

For over three decades, the National Science & Maths Quiz (NSMQ) has been Ghana’s most prestigious academic competition, uniting schools in a battle of wits and scientific knowledge. But beyond the intense contests and fierce rivalries, there are fascinating stories and little-known facts that make the NSMQ truly iconic. Here are ten things you probably didn’t know about this legendary quiz show!

1.   Born on a Tennis Court: The idea for the NSMQ was conceived during a tennis game at the University of Ghana, Legon. Mr. Kwaku Mensa-Bonsu, then Managing Director of Primetime, questioned why birds could stand on electric wires without being electrocuted. This curiosity led to the birth of a quiz programme that explains scientific concepts through competition.

2.   Originally Not Just for Students: While today’s NSMQ is a Senior High School battle, the initial vision was broader. The programme was designed to educate the general public on the science behind every day phenomena, beyond the school curriculum.

3.   The NSMQ Tune is Mozart’s Music: The famous NSMQ theme song wasn’t composed for the quiz. It is actually "Voi Che Sapete", a classical piece by Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, written in the 18th century. The Italian lyrics translate to "You know what love is."

4.   Ghana’s Longest-Running TV Quiz Show: NSMQ holds the record as Ghana’s longest-running, independently-produced television quiz show. Since its launch in 1993, it has been a staple of academic excellence.

5.   The Trophy Has Changed Over the Years: The NSMQ trophy has gone through multiple designs. Each iteration represents the evolving prestige of the competition, making it one of the most sought-after trophies among SHS students.

6.   The First-Ever Winners: The inaugural NSMQ Champions in 1994 were Prempeh College. This historic win set the tone for the fierce inter-school rivalries we see today.

7.   Historic Expansion in 2024:The 2024 NSMQ featured a record-breaking 157 schools—the highest number in the competition’s history.

8.   NSMQ Beyond Academics:The competition has sparked infrastructure development in schools across Ghana, with alumni funding state-of-the-art science labs to improve their alma mater’s chances of winning.

  1. Eleven Schools Have Claimed the NSMQ National Championship: Since its inception in 1993, only 11 schools have had the honour of winning the prestigious National Science & Maths Quiz (NSMQ) National Championship.

10.NSMQ Champions Inspire the Next Generation: Many past winners have gone on to become top scientists, engineers, and leaders in Ghana and beyond. The competition continues to be a launchpad for brilliance.

This year’s edition of your favourite competition is set to be the most thrilling yet—more intense battles, unexpected twists, and jaw-dropping moments await! Stay tuned for an unforgettable NSMQ experience!
