One of the most anticipated contests in the One-eighth Stage of the 2024 NSMQ took place among Achimota School, Accra Girls' SHS, and Sunyani SHS. The room was packed with enthusiastic supporters from all three schools, adding to the charged atmosphere. At the end of the contest, Accra Girls' SHS, who made their debut after nearly a decade-long hiatus from the National Championship, were eliminated by Achimota School, who won with 46 points.
As the contest kicked off, the Quiz mistress, Dr. Anita Oppong set the tone by asking the students about their expectations. Accra Girls' SHS shared that their journey so far had been great, while Sunyani SHS, the Regional Champions, expressed their determination to put on their best performance. Achimota School, a seeded school, confidently stated that they were certain of their victory.
The first round was fierce, with all three schools vying for dominance. Achimota School took an early lead, scoring 18 points, closely followed by Sunyani SHS with 17 points, and Accra Girls' SHS with 12 points.
Accra Girls’ SHS turned the tide in the ‘Prudential Life Speed Race Round’, answering quickly and accurately, adding seven points to their tally. Sunyani managed to gain just one point, while Achimota added four points.
In the ‘Problem of the Day Round’, Achimota School's attempt to solve the problem earned them two points, Sunyani gained one point, and Accra Girls’ SHS fell behind, scoring no points in this round.
The ‘Jupay Money Transfer True/False Round’ was intense, as Sunyani SHS and Accra Girls’ SHS tied with 32 points, while Achimota maintained their lead with 40 points, setting the stage for an intense final round.
The contest concluded with the ‘Goil Riddle Bonanza Round,’ where Achimota School secured their victory by correctly answering two riddles, finishing with 46 points and advancing to the next stage of the competition. Despite Accra Girls’ promising return after nearly a decade-long hiatus, they were unfortunately eliminated. Hopefully, this won’t lead to another extended absence from the NSMQ.
