Auditorium 900—October 21, 2024

St. Augustine’s College, the 2019 NSMQ champions, outperformed T.I. AMASS, Kumasi, and Queen of Peace SHS in their One-eighth Stage contest in Auditorium 900, winning decisively with 73 points.

Despite their impressive score, positioning them as contenders for the Pepsodent Highest Scorer Award, they missed out on the GOIL Riddle Bonanza Award after answering only two riddles.

Fishermen in dreamland!

Before the contest began, students and supporters from St. Augustine’s College filled the auditorium with their loud chants. The arrival of Quiz Mistress, Dr. Thelma Ohene-Agyei—and the reading of the ground rules—finally settled the crowd.

Despite the charged atmosphere, the other schools remained composed as they took their seats and were introduced by the Quiz Mistress. The introductory remarks from the contestants showcased their poise and readiness, with each school displaying confidence and determination to progress to the Quarter-final Stage.

St. Augustine’s College lived up to the earlier expectations with a flawless performance in Round One, answering all their questions correctly and ending with 25 points. T.I. AMASS, Kumasi, followed closely with 23 points, while Queen of Peace SHS struggled, finishing the round with just eight points.

St. Augustine’s College dominated the Prudential Life Insurance Speed Race, with each correct answer sparking enthusiastic reactions from the crowd, prompting the Quiz Mistress to call for calm. They answered six questions correctly, raising their score to an impressive 41 points by the end of Round Two. Meanwhile, Queen of Peace SHS struggled with just six points, and T.I. AMASS, Kumasi, trailed with 28 points.

The crowd, biased towards St. Augustine’s College, as this was very much home turf, had even more reason to celebrate as the 'Fishermen' achieved a perfect score of 10 in the 'Problem of the Day' round. T.I. AMASS, Kumasi followed with seven points, while Queen of Peace SHS earned just two points.

Another flawless performance in the Jupay Money Transfer True/False round strengthened St. Augustine’s College's lead, finishing the round with 67 points. T.I. AMASS, Kumasi followed with 42 points, while Queen of Peace SHS trailed with 15 points.

St. Augustine’s College sealed their victory with the correct answer to the final riddle in the GOIL Riddle Bonanza, though they fell short of the three correct answers needed to secure the cash prize from GOIL.

They concluded the contest with a dominant 73 points, leaving T.I. AMASS, Kumasi (42 points), and Queen of Peace SHS (15 points) far behind. Chants of 'Chlorine, Chlorine, Chlorine!' the answer to the final riddle correctly given by St. Augustine’s College marked the end of the contest as the celebrations continued.
