SGS Auditorium – October 20th, 2024
Mfantsipim School has once again demonstrated why they are a force to be reckoned with, after defeating University Practice SHS and Winneba SHS in an all-Central Regional derby at the SGS Auditorium. The contest concluded with Mfantsipim advancing to the Quarter-final Stage with 50 points, while University Practice and Winneba SHS exited with 43 and 34 points, respectively.
As it was a Central Regional affair, the auditorium was packed with current and former students from all three schools, with some having to watch the live broadcast from the reception area due to the high turnout.
Dr. Mrs. Gladys Odey Schwinger, who moderated the contest, had to frequently remind the contestants to keep their focus on her and not the lively supporters in the auditorium.
The contest, which was full of Central Regional pride, saw University Practice take the early lead in the first round. They had previously promised to “host and win” following their preliminary victory over Afua Kobi Ampem Girls’ SHS and St. Andrews SHS. However, Mfantsipim School and Winneba SHS were close behind.
There was a loud cheer from the audience when the Quiz Mistress announced the results at the end of the first round. Mfantsipim School challenged one of the questions, and after a review by the consultants, their answer was accepted, and the necessary points were awarded.
During the Prudential Insurance Speed Race round, Mfantsipim School performed exceptionally well, overtaking University Practice and extending their lead. Winneba SHS made an effort but could not secure a high score.
At the start of the third round, Mfantsipim School substituted one of their contestants, a move that brought renewed energy. This contestant helped Mfantsipim score five out of ten points in the Problem of the Day. University Practice also scored five points, while Winneba SHS managed just one point.
In the Jupay Money Transfer True/ False round, University Practice and Mfantsipim School left Winneba SHS behind, with University Practice answering six questions correctly and Mfantsipim answering five correctly.
University Practice made several attempts to answer the riddles in Round Five but was unsuccessful, which allowed Mfantsipim School to secure their lead. None of the schools managed to win the Goil Riddle Bonanza.
In the end, Mfantsipim School emerged victorious and advanced to the Quarter-final Stage of the 2024 National Science & Maths Quiz.
