NSMQ 2023: Dramatic Victory as OLA Girls' SHS,Ho Triumphs Over Boa Amponsem with a Tiebreaker

OLA Girls'SHS, Ho, Adiembra SHS, and Boa Amponsem were the last schools to compete on the final day of the Preliminary Stage at the National Science & Maths Quiz Competition. Although Ola Girls’ SHS had a lead in the first three rounds, they ended up in a tie with Boa Amponsem at 20 points. The tie persisted in the final round, with both Ola Girls’ and Boa Amponsem finishing at 23 points. After a tiebreaker, OLA Girls’SHS, Ho secured their qualification for the One-eighth Stage.

The 30th Anniversary edition of the National Science & Maths Quiz kicked off, on October 6th, 2023. As an exciting highlight of the 30th Anniversary celebrations, this year's NSMQ is being hosted in two distinct regions: KNUST in Kumasi and the National Theatre in Accra. This historic occurrence represents the first time the National Championship spans across two regions. KNUST will serve as the venue for the preliminary four stages of the competition, with the Grand Finale scheduled to captivate audiences at the National Theatre.


All the contestants were seated in the KNUST Auditorium by 2:30 p.m., eagerly awaiting the start of the competition. The Quiz Mistress, Mrs. Gladys Odey Schwinger officially commenced the contest at 3:15 p.m. Competing for a coveted spot in the One-eighth Stage of the National Science & Maths Quiz Competition were Ola Girls’ SHS, Boa Amponsem SHS, and Adiembra SHS.

In Round One, Ola Girls’ SHS and Boa Amponsem SHS were tied at 14 points, while Adiembra SHS scored 8 points. However, at the conclusion of Round Two, Ola Girls’ took the lead with 14 points, while Boa Amponsem SHS and Adiembra SHS secured 12 and 06 points, respectively. At the True/False Stage, Round Four, Ola Girls’ failed to answer most of the questions and ended up tying with Boa Amponsem at 20 points.



The final round posed challenges as a dispute arose over a riddle between Ola Girls’ SHS and Boa Amponsem SHS. Ola Girls’ and Boa Amponsem SHS once again found themselves tied at 23 points, while Adiembra scored 16 points. Ultimately, the tiebreaker favoured Ola Girls’ SHS, securing their qualification for the One-eighth Stage of the National Science & Maths Quiz Competition.
