SGS Auditorium – October 20, 2024
Pope John SHS & Minor Seminary are celebrating their advancement to the Quarter-final Stage after winning their contest with 33 points, narrowly defeating St. Mary’s Boys’ with 30 points, and Akumfi Ameyaw SHTS with 19 points.
Quiz Mistress, Dr. Mrs. Gladys Odey Schwinger, had little difficulty managing the audience, as only a few past and present students from the participating schools were present.
Before the contest, an alumnus of Pope John SHS & Minor Seminary confidently promised that they would progress beyond the One-eighth Stage, with hopes of winning the entire competition.
The contest was full of surprises, and it took a tiebreaker to determine the winner, as both Pope John SHS & Minor Seminary and St. Mary’s Boys’ ended with the same score.
Round one began slowly for all three schools, but things picked up after a few questions, with St. Mary’s Boys’ eventually taking the lead amid loud cheers from their old boys.
The Prudential Insurance Speed Race round saw all three schools struggling, with contestants losing points rather than gaining them. Supporters continued to motivate their teams, but the round ended with all three schools posting low scores, and Akumfi Ameyaw SHTS losing most of their points from the first round.
One of the key concerns of the contest, the Problem of the Day round, saw Akumfi Ameyaw SHTS, Pope John SHS & Minor Seminary, and St. Mary’s Boys’ struggling, as they all recorded low scores. The third round ended with both St. Mary’s Boys’ and Pope John SHS & Minor Seminary tied at 17 points.
The Jupay Money Transfer True / False round separated the teams further, as St. Mary’s Boys’ missed only one question, while Akumfi Ameyaw SHTS failed to answer two questions correctly, and Pope John SHS & Minor Seminary missed three. Despite this, it was St. Mary’s Boys’ who led going into the final round.
The Goil Riddle Bonanza surprised many supporters, especially those from Pope John SHS & Minor Seminary, who managed to answer two of the four riddles correctly, with Akumfi Ameyaw SHTS answering the other two.
At the end of the contest, Pope John SHS & Minor Seminary and St. Mary’s Boys’ were tied at 30 points, forcing the Quiz Mistress to organise a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker favoured Pope John SHS & Minor Seminary, leaving St. Mary’s Boys’ in tears.
